Published installed prices for an [automatic driveway gate](https://portillo-fences.com/automatic-gates/) run from $2,380 to $8,000 nationally, with Angi's national average at $4,000 (updated September 17, 2026). That is a national range, not a Hudson Valley bid, and the spread inside it comes from the gate type, the operator, the safety devices, how far power has to travel, and what your town asks for.

## Key Takeaways

Installed price, national

Angi lists $2,380 to $8,000, with swing gates at $1,000 to $6,000 and sliding gates at $1,500 to $5,000. HomeAdvisor lists $2,500 to $5,000 for a typical job within a wider $750 to $11,000 range

Operator equipment alone

a LiftMaster dual swing kit is $1,833.06 for the LA400UL and $2,740.20 for the LA500UL, and the RSL12UL single-slide kit is $1,920.44, per one dealer listing

Safety devices are separate lines

monitored photo eyes at $208.62 to $223.99, a 5-foot sensing edge at $104.99, a loop detector at $123.28

UL 325 applies to residential gates

Class I covers garages and parking areas associated with one to four single-family homes, and it requires two independent entrapment-protection means

Running cost is small

standby electricity works out to about $0.17 to $5.17 a year, while the manuals call for monthly testing and a battery change every three years

## What the published installed prices say

Each of these is quoted as its source states it, and none should be averaged with another.

- **Angi, national, updated September 17, 2026**: automatic gate installation $2,380 to $8,000, average $4,000. Swing [gates](https://portillo-fences.com/gates/) $1,000 to $6,000, sliding gates $1,500 to $5,000, permit fees commonly $150 to $300
- **HomeAdvisor, national, updated June 17, 2026**: automatic driveway-[gate installation](https://portillo-fences.com/gate-installation/) $2,500 to $5,000, within a broader $750 to $11,000 project range. Swing gates $840 to $6,000 plus up to $80 per hour in labor, sliding gates $700 to $4,080
- **HomeAdvisor Pro, national, updated about 2022**: swing-gate installation $500 to $8,500 plus up to $80 per hour in labor, sliding gates $1,050 to $5,200

The swing and slide ranges overlap heavily, so gate type alone does not set the price. The site does: a swing leaf needs room to open, a slide gate needs a clear run along the fence line, and either needs power and a foundation.

A swing leaf needs room to open, and a slide gate needs a clear run along the fence line.

## What the equipment costs on its own

One LiftMaster dealer listing, read October 2, 2026, gives equipment-only prices. These exclude installation, trenching and electrical work.

FAAC operators are priced by model. A quote that uses a FAAC operator should name the model, and a dealer quotation for that model gives you the real number.

On the dealer listing, the LiftMaster LA400UL dual swing kit is $1,833.06, equipment only.

## Safety devices belong on the quote as lines

ANSI/CAN/UL 325, Seventh Edition, sorts vehicular gate operators into classes. Class I, Residential, is a garage or parking area associated with one to four single-family residences, which is the case a home driveway gate describes. Entrapment protection is a requirement of the standard's Section 32, and Table 32.1 lists the permitted protection types:

- **Type A**: inherent entrapment protection built into the operator
- **Type B1**: a non-contact sensor, such as a photoelectric eye
- **Type B2**: a contact sensor, such as a sensing edge
- **Type C**: inherent force limiting, an adjustable clutch or a pressure relief device (swing and barrier-[arm operators](https://portillo-fences.com/arm-operators/))
- **Type D**: an actuating device that needs continuous pressure to keep the gate moving

Slide gates may use Types A, B1, B2 or D. Swing gates may also use Type C. The same device cannot serve as both required means, so a typical residential [slide operator](https://portillo-fences.com/slide-operators/) pairs its built-in Type A protection with an external B1, B2 or D device. Manufacturers and UL describe this as two independent devices, installed and active, for each entrapment zone.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission's release of October 23, 2001 on automatic gates counted 32 deaths since 1985, 20 of them children, and nearly 25,000 injuries from 1990 through 2000. Its recommendations included two entrapment-prevention mechanisms, no gaps over 2¼ inches, guarded rollers and warning signs on both sides.

The accessories carry real prices on that dealer listing: monitored retro-reflective photo eye $208.62, monitored through-beam photo eyes $223.99, monitored wireless edge kit $160.66, 5-foot sensing edge $104.99, vehicle loop detector $123.28, wireless keypad $243.25 and smart video intercom $699.00.

The gate itself has a standard too. ASTM F2200 requires openings in the gate and the adjacent fence to stop a 2¼-inch sphere, limits the gap to the nearest fixed object parallel to the road to 2¼ inches, and calls for guarded rollers and positive stops. If a gate that has been hanging by hand is going to be automated, Section 4.1.10 says it must be upgraded to comply. New York's Residential Code Appendix BH, the 2025 Building Code Section 3110.2 and the 2025 Fire Code Sections 503.5 and 503.6 all name F2200, and Appendix BH103.2 requires the operator to be listed under UL 325. Ask whether an existing gate needs rework before the quote is final.

## Power, trenching and conduit

The line-voltage supply to the operator is its own job. The National Electrical Code's Table 300.5 gives the burial depths that commonly apply, measured from the top of the cable or conduit to finished grade:

- **Direct-burial cable**: 24 inches
- **Nonmetallic conduit such as PVC**: 18 inches
- **Rigid metal or intermediate metal conduit**: 6 inches
- **120-volt, GFCI-protected, 20-amp residential branch circuit**: 12 inches in the table's residential column
- **Under a driveway at a one- or two-family home**: 18 inches for the ordinary wiring methods, with the 120-volt GFCI exception subject to its own conditions

The LiftMaster LA500UL takes 120 volts AC at 2 amperes or 240 volts AC at 1 ampere and runs a 24-volt DC system. The FAAC 415 takes a 115-volt or 230-volt supply, and its manual wants low-voltage accessory cables kept in separate sheaths from the 115-volt cable. Low-voltage accessory wiring does not replace the supply circuit, so trenching, conduit, a GFCI-protected circuit and an electrician belong on the quote.

![Narrow trench cut along the edge of a driveway with gray PVC conduit laid in the bottom](https://portillo-fences.com/images/blog/automatic-driveway-gate-cost/conduit-trench-driveway.jpg)

The National Electrical Code Table 300.5 lists 18 inches of cover for nonmetallic conduit such as PVC.

## Permits and fees

Permits are set town by town. Yorktown's published fee schedule lists residential electrical permits at $75 for "all other" residential work, where an earlier schedule listed $50, and building permits are valuation-based, with the first $1,000 listed at $50. A gate with a new operator and a new electrical supply can involve both building and electrical review. In Southeast, [Carmel](https://portillo-fences.com/carmel-ny/), [Peekskill](https://portillo-fences.com/peekskill-ny/), Patterson or any other town, ask the building department which permits apply to an automatic gate, what they cost and how long review takes, before you sign.

## What it costs to run and keep running

Standby power is small. The LA500UL main board draws 2.7 milliamps at 24 volts with no radios programmed, which works out to about $0.17 a year at the EIA's 2026 New York residential average of 29.49 cents per kilowatt-hour. FAAC's published 2-watt standby figure for its E034 control board, which is a board figure rather than a whole-system one, works out to about $5.17 a year at the same rate. Both figures leave out battery charging, accessories, loop detectors, radio modules, heaters and the energy of the gate's own cycles, and your utility's actual rate will differ.

Upkeep is time rather than electricity. The LA500UL and RSL12UL manuals call for monthly testing of the entrapment devices, warning signs, accessories, electrical connections, mounting hardware and the operator, plus a six-month check of the manual release and the gate. LiftMaster says to replace batteries every three years for best performance. The LA500UL has a two-year operator warranty and the RSL12UL a three-year warranty, and battery replacement is excluded from the warranty terms cited for comparable LiftMaster gate products. The FAAC 415 manual calls for a general system check every six months with attention to the safety devices. Ask the dealer for the written battery interval and warranty term for the exact FAAC model you are quoted.

UL 325 calls for two independent entrapment-protection means, and the LA500UL and RSL12UL manuals call for monthly testing of those devices.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: What is a realistic budget for a driveway gate?** A: Nationally, Angi's range is $2,380 to $8,000 and HomeAdvisor's typical job is $2,500 to $5,000. Trenching, power, the gate itself and local permits can move a Hudson Valley job above or below those figures.

**Q: Is a swing or a slide gate cheaper?** A: The published ranges overlap. Angi lists $1,000 to $6,000 for swing and $1,500 to $5,000 for sliding. Your site decides, because swing needs room to open and slide needs a clear run beside the opening.

**Q: Does a residential gate need two safety devices?** A: Yes. UL 325 Class I covers the garages and parking areas of one- to four-family homes, and the standard calls for two independent entrapment-protection means for each entrapment zone.

**Q: Can I use my old gate with a new operator?** A: ASTM F2200 Section 4.1.10 says a non-automated gate that will be automated must be upgraded to comply, so expect the gate to be checked for openings, gaps, rollers and stops.

**Q: What does the electricity cost?** A: The LA500UL's standby draw is about $0.17 a year at 29.49 cents per kilowatt-hour, and a 2-watt control board is about $5.17 a year. Accessories add to both.

A gate price is a stack of line items: operator, safety devices, the gate work, power and trenching, permits and the upkeep that follows. A quote that itemizes them lets you compare it with another one honestly.
