- Chain Link
- Fence Cost
- Fence Specifications

Installed chain link in Westchester County is listed at $12 to $15 per linear foot at 4 feet, $14 to $17 at 5 feet and $16 to $20 at 6 feet, in a June 2022 price guide that assumes 9 to 11 gauge mesh and either galvanized or vinyl-coated fabric. A February 2026 Dutchess County guide lists 4-foot installation at $15 to $30 per foot and puts vinyl-coated fabric about $3 to $5 per foot above galvanized.

The two guides use different dates and assumptions, so treat them as two data points, not a trend. What follows is the specification behind those prices: wire, coating, posts, privacy slats and the town rules that change what you can build.

## Key Takeaways

Westchester installed prices (June 2022)

$12 to $15 per foot at 4 feet, $14 to $17 at 5 feet, $16 to $20 at 6 feet

Dutchess installed price

$15 to $30 per foot at 4 feet, with vinyl-coated about $3 to $5 per foot more than galvanized

Gauge runs backward

11-1/2 gauge is 0.113 inch wire, 11 gauge is 0.120, 9 gauge is 0.148 and 6 gauge is 0.192

Privacy slats add wind load

posts of at least 3 inches outside diameter and no more than 8 feet apart are one contractor's practice guidance

Town rules differ

[Carmel](https://portillo-fences.com/carmel-ny/) does not permit chain link in a front yard, and Fishkill code discourages it

## Gauge and mesh

A lower gauge number means thicker wire. The [Chain Link Fence](https://portillo-fences.com/chain-link-fencing/) Manufacturers Institute (CLFMI) product manual lists common sizes:

Nominal diameter: 0.113 inch

Approximate breaking strength: 750 lbf

Tap a row to open it.

CLFMI's recommended applications by mesh:

- **2-1/8 inch mesh, 11-1/2 gauge**: residential
- **2 inch mesh, 11 gauge**: residential and light commercial
- **2 inch mesh, 9 gauge**: residential, commercial and industrial
- **2 inch mesh, 6 gauge**: commercial, industrial and security
- **1-3/4 inch mesh**: tennis courts at 11 gauge, heavy commercial and industrial at 9, security at 6
- **1-1/4 inch mesh, 11 gauge**: residential and swimming pools

For polymer-coated fabric, the gauge is the steel core wire, not the outside diameter after coating. Residential fabric generally uses larger mesh and a thinner wire, and commercial fabric uses smaller mesh and thicker wire. A pool barrier has its own mesh limit, which depends on the code edition your building department applies.

A February 2026 Dutchess County guide puts vinyl-coated fabric about $3 to $5 per foot above galvanized.

## Coating classes

Name the coating by its ASTM class and weight on the quote, not by a marketing term.

- **ASTM A392, galvanized fabric**: Class 1 is at least 1.2 ounces of zinc per square foot, Class 2 is at least 2.0 ounces
- **ASTM F668, polymer-coated fabric**: Class 1 is polymer extruded over metallic-coated wire, Class 2a is extruded and adhered, Class 2b is fused and adhered. CLFMI lists the thickness at 0.015 inch minimum and 0.025 inch maximum for Classes 1 and 2a, and 0.006 to 0.010 inch for Class 2b
- **ASTM A491, aluminum-coated fabric**: a January 2026 manufacturer summary lists 0.40 ounces per square foot for 6, 9 and 10 gauge, 0.35 for 11 gauge and 0.30 for 11-1/2 gauge
- **ASTM A817, coated wire**: Type I aluminum at 0.40 ounces, Type II zinc in Classes 3, 4 and 5 at 0.90, 1.20 and 2.00 ounces, and Type III zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal in Class 60 and Class 100 at 0.60 and 1.00 ounce

## Posts, rail and footings

The CLFMI manual treats the posts and rail as a system selected for height, wind exposure, fabric gauge, mesh and use. For ASTM F1083 Schedule 40 pipe, its minimum outside diameters by fence height are:

1.900 inches

Tap a row to open it.

Terminal posts are generally one outside-diameter size larger than line posts. Line posts are set no more than 10 feet on center. ASTM F567-23 covers post location, setting, terminal bracing, top rail, tension wire, fabric and [gates](https://portillo-fences.com/gates/). ASTM F567 practice text calls for a footing at least 24 inches deep, plus 3 inches for each foot of height over 4 feet, up to 60 inches total, subject to use and local conditions. It places terminal posts at the start and end of each run and at abrupt changes in alignment.

Terminal posts are generally one outside-diameter size larger than line posts, and line posts are set no more than 10 feet on center.

## Privacy slats and wind

Slats come two ways: woven into the fabric or inserted into fabric already up. One maker states its PVC slats give about 90% visual privacy, and gives its slat material an approximate 75% wind and privacy factor. A screen manufacturer says screen material adds wind load and that an existing fence must be tensioned, anchored and structurally able to carry it; it lists 35% wind-pass-through material as better in high wind than a 90% block.

CLFMI says privacy slats, and fences over 8 feet high with mesh of 1 inch or smaller, call for a wind-load force and strength analysis of post size and spacing. For a slatted fence, Hoover Fence's practice guidance is posts at least 3 inches outside diameter and no more than 8 feet apart, with stronger and deeper footings where needed. That is contractor guidance, not code. A slatted fence is a wind-catching surface, so post diameter, spacing, rail layout, footing size, height, exposure and soil have to be worked out together.

A slatted fence catches wind, so post diameter, spacing, rail layout and footing size are worked out together.

## Slopes and long runs

ASTM F567 puts terminal posts at abrupt changes in vertical alignment, which supports treating a major grade break as a new section. A Dutchess County contractor guide says significant grade changes need stepped sections or custom-racked panels and add labor and material. No single slope percentage triggers that, so have the fence line measured and ask whether stepped sections, racking or extra terminal and pull posts are needed. CLFMI says tension wire or rail at the base and top helps carry loads and vertical sag.

## Town rules in Putnam and Dutchess

- **Town of [Carmel](https://portillo-fences.com/carmel-ny/), Section 156-19**: fences may not exceed four feet in a front yard or a side yard in front of the building line, or six feet in a rear yard or a side yard behind it. Section 156-19(A)(2) does not permit chain link in any front yard, and permits it elsewhere only with a closed loop at the top. A corner lot can have a fence in one front yard at the required setback line, at the Building Inspector's discretion.
- **Town of Southeast, Sections 138-25 through 138-29**: a fence or wall no more than three feet high along any lot line and no more than six feet behind the required front yard, with a fence over six feet allowed up to 10 feet when set back from the lot line by two-thirds of the required setback. A permit from the Building Inspector is required under Section 138-101, and a sight triangle at street intersections limits height to three feet above the street centerline apex.
- **Village of [Brewster](https://portillo-fences.com/brewster-ny/), Section 263-17(P)**: four feet in a front yard or a side yard in front of the building line, six feet in a rear yard or behind it. A permit from the Village Code Enforcement Officer is required, with inspection after completion.
- **Village of Fishkill, Sections 171-29 and 171-30**: chain link and vinyl are discouraged as materials, four feet in front yards, six feet in side and rear yards, and 36 inches on a corner lot or within a curb-cut sight triangle.

These rules belong to those municipalities. Check the one that covers your parcel.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: What does a chain link fence cost per foot installed?** A: One Westchester guide from June 2022 lists $12 to $20 depending on height from 4 to 6 feet, and a Dutchess guide lists $15 to $30 for 4 feet. Your site conditions and gates change the number.

**Q: Which gauge is best for a home?** A: CLFMI lists 11-1/2 gauge in 2-1/8 inch mesh and 11 gauge in 2 inch mesh for residential use, and 9 gauge in 2 inch mesh for residential, commercial and industrial use.

**Q: Is vinyl-coated chain link more expensive?** A: The Dutchess guide puts black or green vinyl-coated about $3 to $5 per foot above galvanized. The Westchester guide shows the vinyl-coated 9-gauge fabric at the higher end of its range.

**Q: Can I add privacy slats to an existing fence?** A: Slats add wind load, so the posts, spacing and footings have to be evaluated first. Ask the installer what post size and spacing the slatted fence will use.

**Q: Do I need a permit?** A: The Town of Southeast and the Village of [Brewster](https://portillo-fences.com/brewster-ny/) each require a permit before fence work. Confirm with the building department for your municipality.

Chain link is a set of specifications more than a single product. Naming the gauge, mesh, coating class and post size on the quote lets you compare one bid to another.
