Most fence quotes in New York land between $15 and $60 per linear foot installed, and the spread inside that range is not the contractor being greedy. It is material, height, how much rock is under your yard, and how many [gates](https://portillo-fences.com/gates/) you need.

Here is what the published figures actually say, what moves them on a real property, and what a quote often leaves out.

![Wood stakes and string marking a proposed fence line across a sloped, rocky back yard](https://portillo-fences.com/images/blog/fence-cost-hudson-valley/unmarked-fence-line.jpg)

A per-foot price assumes level ground, normal soil and a clear fence line; rock and slope are the usual exceptions.

## Key Takeaways

Material sets the floor

chain link runs $13.08 to $32.70 per linear foot in New York, vinyl $15 to $40, aluminum around $61, wood $15 to $35

Site conditions add 10% to 40%

rock, slope and restricted access are the three that move a number most

Gates are priced separately

$200 to $400 for a 4-foot walk gate, $1,000 to $3,000 for a 12-foot driveway gate

Permits are usually excluded

and in some towns no permit is needed at all, which changes the math

Height and grade are not comparable

a 4-foot chain link and a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence are different products at different prices

## What the published figures say, by material

These are statewide New York or national figures, each quoted as its source states it. None of them is a Hudson Valley bid on your property, and they should not be averaged together.

**Chain link.** ProjectCosted puts New York at $13.08 to $32.70 per linear foot in 2026. HomeGuide's national range is $10 to $40, with the low end tied to 4-foot galvanized steel mesh.

**Vinyl.** Angi's New York market page gives $15 to $40 per linear foot for standard 4-foot or 6-foot vinyl, with materials at $10 to $30 and labor at $5 to $10. Vinyl privacy is listed separately at $25 to $60. Our own [vinyl picket installation guide](https://portillo-fences.com/blog/vinyl-picket-fence-installation/) puts a 4-foot picket at $14 to $30 and 6-foot privacy at $30 to $60.

**Wood.** CostFlowAI and Fence Contractor Pros both put New York at $15 to $35 per linear foot for a 6-foot wood privacy fence on level ground. National [Fencing](https://portillo-fences.com/fencing/) Authority's national figure, built on RSMeans data, is $17 to $45 depending on species and board layout.

**Aluminum.** FindMyFencer reports roughly $61 per linear foot installed statewide in New York. HomeGuide and National Fencing Authority both give a national $25 to $75, which covers everything from split rail to ornamental.

The gap between a $25 [aluminum fence](https://portillo-fences.com/aluminum-fencing/) and a $75 one is not quality alone. It is height, picket spacing, whether the panels are rackable for a slope, and whether the design is ornamental.

Statewide New York ranges run from $13.08 to $32.70 per linear foot for chain link up to about $61 for aluminum.

## What moves the number on your property

A per-foot price assumes level ground, normal soil and a clear fence line. Published adjustments for when that is not true:

- **Rocky soil**: roughly 20% to 40% more labor
- **Slopes over 10% grade**: roughly 15% to 25% more labor
- **Restricted access**: roughly 10% to 20% more labor
- **Frost depth over 36 inches**: about $1 to $3 per linear foot
- **Utility conflicts needing hand digging**: about $5 to $15 per linear foot
- **Removing an old fence**: $3 to $5 per linear foot in Angi's New York guide, $3 to $8 from National Fencing Authority once hauling and disposal are counted
- **Brush, vines and roots grown into the line**: about $2 to $5 per linear foot
- **Tree or stump removal**: $200 to $2,000 for a privacy fence project

Shape matters too. A short run with four corners carries more end posts, bracing and layout per foot than a long straight run of the same length. Nobody publishes a reliable dollar figure for that in this region, so ask how your layout was priced.

![A crew member drilling a post hole into exposed rock beside a staked fence line](https://portillo-fences.com/images/blog/fence-cost-hudson-valley/post-holes-in-ledge.jpg)

Rocky soil adds roughly 20% to 40% more labor, and rock excavation is never inside the per-foot rate.

## Gates are their own line

Gate pricing does not follow the per-foot rate, and this is where quotes diverge most.

Angi's 2026 figures: $200 to $400 for a 4-foot gate, $400 to $800 for an 8-foot double swing, around $1,000 for a 10-foot driveway gate, $1,000 to $3,000 at 12 feet, and $1,200 to $3,600 at 14 feet. By material, chain link and vinyl gates run $200 to $1,000, wood $400 to $8,500, aluminum $2,000 to $8,500, and wrought iron $1,500 to $5,000. Labor averages $50 an hour with four to six hours for a single gate.

Hardware is the part people forget: hinges, latch, lock, drop rods, rollers, guide posts, and on an automated gate the keypad, loop detectors, safety edges, operator, trenching and controls. Those belong on the quote as their own lines. If you are pricing an automated entrance, our [automatic gates](https://portillo-fences.com/automatic-gates/) page covers what the system needs from the site.

Cantilever gates are a separate case. They need a longer frame, a counterbalance section, rollers and guide hardware, and no published Hudson Valley price for one holds up. Ask for the frame, counterbalance, rollers, operator, electrical work and safety hardware itemized separately.

![A finished double driveway gate closed between two gate posts in a six-foot fence](https://portillo-fences.com/images/blog/fence-cost-hudson-valley/finished-driveway-gate.jpg)

A 12-foot driveway gate runs $1,000 to $3,000 in Angi's 2026 figures, before any automation hardware.

## What a quote often leaves out

Ask whether each of these is included or excluded, in writing:

- **Permit fees.** Angi's New York coverage averages $20 to $60, but municipal fees vary and some towns charge nothing because no permit is required.
- **Survey.** Towns commonly ask for one when setbacks or property lines are in question. The Town of Kent requires a survey showing setbacks on permit applications. No per-foot range includes it.
- **Utility markout.** New York requires calling 811 before digging. The markout itself is usually free; private locating, redesign or hand digging is not.
- **Grading.** Listed separately on every cost guide, at $400 to $6,000 depending on length and earth moved.
- **Old fence disposal.** $3 to $8 per linear foot.
- **Gate automation and electrical.** Usually excluded unless the quote lists it.
- **Rock excavation, ledge drilling, drainage and landscape restoration.** Site-specific work, never inside the per-foot rate.

## Permits vary more than people expect

The permit question is not one answer for the Hudson Valley. It is one answer per municipality, and the differences are real:

- **Town of Kent**: fences up to 6 feet in side or rear yards need no permit at all
- **Town of Patterson**: no building permit for fences, but Town Code 154-15 still applies
- **Town of Bedford**: permits are required for fences and walls
- **Town of Ulster**: the fence permit application states a $50 fee
- **Town of Putnam Valley**: has a Fence and Wall permit, applications taken weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Jurisdiction catches people out. [Brewster](https://portillo-fences.com/brewster-ny/) is a village inside the Town of Southeast, and [Wappingers Falls](https://portillo-fences.com/wappingers-falls-ny/) and [Newburgh](https://portillo-fences.com/newburgh-ny/) each have a village and a town. Check which municipality your parcel actually sits in on your tax record before you call anyone, then confirm the fee and the review time with that building office.

New York also sets contract rules. Westchester, Putnam and Rockland each license home improvement contractors separately, so a licence from one county is not a licence in the next.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: What is a realistic budget for 150 feet of fence?** A: At New York figures, 150 feet of 6-foot wood privacy runs roughly $2,250 to $5,250 before gates, permits and site work. The same run in vinyl privacy is roughly $3,750 to $9,000. Add a gate and your site conditions on top.

**Q: Why is one quote thousands higher than another?** A: Usually post depth, post material, panel grade, gate hardware, and whether permits, removal and disposal are inside the price or outside it. Compare the exclusions, not the totals.

**Q: Does a longer fence cost less per foot?** A: Per foot, often yes, because mobilization and corner posts spread over more distance. The total still goes up with length.

**Q: Is a fence cheaper in winter?** A: Ask each contractor directly whether the price, the scheduling window or the material availability changes by season, and get that answer written into the quote. Prices here are quoted per job, not per calendar month.

**Q: Do I need a survey?** A: Only your municipality can say. Towns ask for one when setbacks or a property line are in question, and it is not included in any per-foot price.

A fence price is a set of decisions, not a single number. Once you know the material, the height, what is under the ground and how many gates you need, the range narrows fast, and a quote that lists its exclusions is worth more than one with a lower total and no detail.
