- Access Control
- Gate Keypads
- Intercoms

A keypad, a video intercom and a phone app all do one job at the gate: close a relay circuit connected to the operator's access input. What differs is what each depends on. A keypad or card reader that checks credentials locally keeps working when the internet is down. A phone command that rides on a cloud service, Wi-Fi or a cellular connection cannot be assumed to work during an outage.

## Key Takeaways

Local beats cloud in an outage

a LiftMaster KPW5 keypad stores permanent and temporary PINs locally, and a KPR2000 keypad authenticates PINs or cards and runs its relay without a cloud service

The gate connection is a dry contact

a relay closes a circuit at the operator's access input, so a replacement keypad or intercom can often reuse the existing operator if its relay matches the voltage, current and pulse or latch behavior

Cellular networks have been shut down

AT&T ended 3G on February 22, 2022, T-Mobile retired 3G UMTS on July 1, 2022 and 2G GSM on August 3, 2026, and Verizon's CDMA network was decommissioned as of January 3, 2023

Cloud features can carry a subscription

DoorBird Cloud Pro is $119.66 for 12 months and renews automatically, while DoorBird Cloud Free is permanently free

The fire code decides the emergency method

Section 503.6 of the 2024 Fire Code of New York State requires an approved means of emergency operation for security gates across fire apparatus access roads

## How each one reaches the gate

The gate operator has an access input that accepts a trigger. A dry-contact relay is a separate interface from card-data protocols: it does not transmit card data, it simply closes or opens a circuit connected to that input. Because of that, an operator that takes a dry-contact trigger can generally stay in place when the keypad, intercom or phone-access device changes, as long as the replacement supplies a compatible relay output and the voltage, current and pulse or latch behavior match.

A keypad that checks PINs locally keeps working when the internet is down, as long as power and the local equipment are working.

Card readers add another interface. The Security Industry Association describes OSDP as an open standard designed to improve interoperability, cybersecurity and device management over legacy Wiegand. It runs over a two-wire RS-485 bus, is bidirectional and can supervise connected readers, and Version 2 adds Secure Channel encryption, smart-card communications and biometric-reader support. Replacing a Wiegand-only controller with an OSDP controller may need a compatible reader, a converter or rewiring.

The LiftMaster KPR2000 manual documents both modes. In standalone operation, it stores the user database in non-volatile memory, authenticates PINs or cards itself and operates an adjustable relay suitable for a gate operator. In pass-through operation, it sends keypad and card data to an external controller using Wiegand.

## DoorBird, from its own current documentation

This section is based on [DoorBird](https://portillo-fences.com/doorbird-systems/)'s own current pages and datasheets as of October 2, 2026. The LAN API document is dated 2023.

- **Relays**: the D1101V lists one freely configurable bistable latching relay for one door or gate, with Ethernet, a two-wire PoE converter and Wi-Fi connections. The A1081 manual lists two potential-free bistable relays rated up to 24 V DC or AC at 1 A. The relay keeps its state after power loss, and the opener connected to it needs its own power supply
- **Local control**: the LAN API's open-door call energizes the door-opener or alarm-output relay, from relay 1 or 2 on the device or a paired DoorController. It requires a valid user with watch-always permission or a recent ring event
- **Integrations**: DoorBird Connect, included with each DoorBird IP video door station, lists partners including Control4, ASSA ABLOY Accentra, Vivotek, CyberTwice for Microsoft Teams, mediola, Ampio, Enertex KNX and tedee. Its SIP page lists 3CX, Sipgate, Starface, Asterisk, AVLinkPro and Cisco SPA1xx among supported systems, and its Crestron page describes native SIP integration and an optional ControlWorks driver
- **Product lines**: DoorBird's datasheets state that several D2100 and D2100E series products were discontinued on August 1, 2021, and the current datasheets still carry that statement. That is a statement about those product lines. DoorBird's lifecycle page says it provides firmware updates for five years from the date a product is discontinued, so if your station is a D2100-series unit, ask what firmware support applies to it.

## What happens when the internet or the cell network goes down

DoorBird's remote app access and cloud functions depend on network or internet availability, while its local-network relay control does not. LiftMaster's CAP2D page says local system memory allows entry when the internet is down. The CAPXLV2 intercom connects to the cloud by Ethernet or Wi-Fi and accepts a third-party cellular modem.

![Installer mounting a video intercom station on a gate post with a drill](https://portillo-fences.com/images/blog/gate-keypads-intercoms-phone-entry/video-intercom-install.jpg)

DoorBird's local-network relay control does not depend on the internet, while its remote app access does.

Cellular units are the ones to ask about. AT&T says it ended 3G on February 22, 2022 and that it has ended 2G and 3G on its US network, and it continues to describe LTE-M as an available network for connected devices. Verizon says its CDMA network was decommissioned as of January 3, 2023, which affected 1XRTT, 3G CDMA and non-VoLTE 4G devices. T-Mobile retired its 3G UMTS network on July 1, 2022 and discontinued its 2G GSM network on August 3, 2026. Security Brands states that its cellular telephone-entry units that relied on 3G voice may stop making calls, and that the Ascent X1, X2, T1, M1, M4 and M7 need 4G upgrades. LiftMaster says analog telephone-entry systems are being displaced by digital ones as AT&T and Verizon move to digital-only networks, and it recommends digital telephone entry for new community installations. If your phone-entry unit is a cellular model, ask which network generation it uses.

## What the fire code asks of the gate

The 2024 Fire Code of New York State, Section 503.6, says the installation of a security gate across a fire apparatus access road must be approved by the fire code official. The gate needs an approved means of emergency operation, the gate and its emergency operation must stay operational at all times, electric operators must be listed to UL 325, and [automatic gates](https://portillo-fences.com/automatic-gates/) must comply with ASTM F2200. Section 506.1 lets the fire code official require a key box, listed to UL 1037, where access is restricted by secured openings, and Section 506.1.1 requires an approved lock on [gates](https://portillo-fences.com/gates/) or barriers where the official requires one. The state code does not name Knox, a key-switch model or a siren-activated override. It leaves the method to the fire code official.

Local rules add to it:

- **Town of Southeast, Putnam County, Chapter 39, Section 39-20**: lock boxes, including Knox-type boxes, need approval from the Fire Inspector's office before installation, and the cylinder must accept a fire-department registered key that cannot be freely duplicated
- **Town of Orangetown, Rockland County, Chapter 15, Section 15-11F**: the Fire Inspector may require a key box where secured openings make access unduly difficult, and Section 15-11J says permitted security gates must give an unobstructed view of at least 50 percent of protected doors, windows or other openings
- **Rockland County provisions in the Village of [Suffern](https://portillo-fences.com/suffern-ny/) code, Sections 96-18 and 96-21**: approved key boxes for certain secured premises, and security-gate visibility

These address emergency access in general rather than a driveway keypad or siren trigger specifically. Before a security gate goes across a fire apparatus access road in your town, confirm the emergency-access method with the local fire code official.

In the Town of Southeast, a lock box needs Fire Inspector approval before it is installed.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: Will my gate still open from a keypad if the internet is down?** A: A keypad or card reader that checks credentials locally will, provided the power and local equipment are working. A phone command that depends on a cloud service, Wi-Fi or cellular connection cannot be assumed to work.

**Q: Can I add a video intercom to a gate I already have?** A: Usually through the operator's access input, with a relay that matches the operator's voltage, current and pulse or latch behavior. Ask the installer to confirm both before the intercom is bought.

**Q: Does a DoorBird need a subscription?** A: Cloud Free is permanently free. Cloud Pro is $119.66 for 12 months and renews automatically unless canceled.

**Q: Is DoorBird still supporting its gate relay and SIP features?** A: DoorBird's current pages, as of October 2, 2026, document relay control, SIP and the Connect integrations. Its datasheets state that certain D2100 and D2100E series products were discontinued on August 1, 2021, and that statement concerns those products.

**Q: Does the fire department need a way into my gate?** A: If the driveway is a fire apparatus access road, yes. The method is approved by the fire code official, and some towns, such as Southeast, require approval before a lock box goes in.

Match the entry device to what the gate has to do on its worst day: no internet, no cell service, and a fire truck at the end of the driveway. Ask for the relay specifications, the subscription terms and the fire official's requirement before you buy.
