Fence Material Prices: What Wholesale and Retail Show

Published panel, post, gate kit and chain link prices, the 15% contractor discount, New York sales tax on materials, and what warranties require.

A 6 by 8 foot vinyl privacy panel lists at $119.47 at Home Depot, a pressure-treated pine privacy panel at $76.98, and a 50-foot roll of 6-foot galvanized chain link fabric at $150.00. Those are prices for material, not for a fence. Posts, concrete, gates, labor, delivery and removal all come on top, and a panel price cannot be converted into an installed price per foot.

The useful comparison is line by line: what each part costs, what the contractor buys at, and what a warranty requires from the person who installs it.

Contractor and trade pricing

Fence Deck Supply's aluminum price list states that all prices include a 15% contractor discount, effective August 2026. That tells you one named supplier gives one named discount on aluminum. It does not mean a Hudson Valley homeowner can buy at that price, and it does not make 15% a general fence-industry figure. Peak Fence and Supply describes itself as a wholesale distributor for authorized contractors and businesses and invites contractors to call for pricing, without a published figure.

If you plan to buy materials yourself, ask the supplier for the exact product, stock, delivery charge, minimum order, unloading and access charges, and the pickup location before you commit. For equipment such as a post-hole digger, auger or trailer, ask the rental counter for the price of the specific tool your site needs.

Sales tax on materials and installation

New York Tax Bulletin ST-104, Capital Improvements, says building materials purchased for capital improvement work are taxable whether a contractor, subcontractor, repairman or homeowner buys them. A homeowner who buys fence materials directly pays sales tax on them.

When a contractor performs work that qualifies as a capital improvement, the contractor takes a properly completed Form ST-124 from the customer and does not collect sales tax on the project. The contractor still pays tax on the materials purchased, and that cost can be built into the price. Form ST-124 defines a capital improvement as an addition or alteration that substantially adds to the property's value or appreciably prolongs its useful life, becomes part of the real property or is permanently affixed so that removal would cause material damage, and is intended to be a permanent installation. The form cannot be used to buy materials tax-free. The bulletin says classification can depend on the method of installation and may need case-by-case review, so ask your contractor which treatment applies to your job.

What the manufacturer's warranty needs from the installer

Vinyl. Weatherables vinyl fencing, manufactured by USAVinyl, LLC, carries a limited lifetime material warranty for individual residential homeowners on standard colors and a 25-year limited material warranty on woodgrain colors and black. The warranty covers defects in the materials only, and it excludes failures from improper or faulty installation.

Aluminum. Barrette Outdoor Living's Freedom aluminum line carries a transferable limited lifetime warranty on single-family residential properties, subject to its terms. It excludes damage from improper installation and from aluminum products or accessories that Barrette did not make or that were not made for aluminum fence use, and it requires product registration within 30 days of purchase.

Neither warranty says the installer must be authorized, but both make proper installation a condition of coverage. Register the product when the fence goes in, and keep the installation instructions and the contract.

Labor and the do-it-yourself math

LegalClarity's national figures put labor at 30% to 50% of a fence project's total cost and the saving from doing the installation yourself at roughly $10 per linear foot. It lists national installation labor of $5 to $10 per linear foot for vinyl and $15 to $40 per linear foot for aluminum. These are national figures, not Hudson Valley quotes. Before you decide, add what the savings cost you: tool rental, delivery, unloading, the removal and disposal of any old fence, and a warranty that depends on installation you did yourself. For removal, get a written price before you order materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I buy fence materials at wholesale prices? A: The published trade price in this price set is Fence Deck Supply's 15% contractor discount on aluminum, which is for contractors. Call the supplier and ask what is available to you, and ask for the exact product, delivery and pickup terms.

Q: Is a $119.47 vinyl panel the cost of my fence? A: No. That is a 6 by 8 foot panel. Posts, caps, rails, gates, concrete, labor and delivery are separate.

Q: Do I pay sales tax on materials I buy myself? A: Yes. ST-104 treats capital-improvement materials as taxable when a homeowner buys them.

Q: Do I pay sales tax on a contractor's installation? A: A qualifying capital improvement is not taxed on the installation charge when the contractor accepts a completed Form ST-124. Ask which treatment your job gets.

Q: Does doing it myself void a warranty? A: Weatherables and Barrette both exclude damage from improper installation. Follow the installation instructions closely, and register Barrette aluminum within 30 days.

Q: How much does labor add? A: Nationally, 30% to 50% of the project cost, or $5 to $10 per linear foot for vinyl and $15 to $40 for aluminum. Hudson Valley quotes can differ.

A material price tells you one thing: what a part costs before anyone installs it. A contractor's quote has to cover that part plus the post set under it, the gate built into it and the warranty it has to stand behind.
