Who We Are
Portillo Fences and Gates is a full-service fencing and gate company based in the Hudson Valley. We work with homeowners, property managers, pool owners, and commercial clients from Yonkers and White Plains up through Poughkeepsie, Kingston, and beyond.
Our work covers the full picture: wood, vinyl, aluminum, chain link, and custom fencing, plus gate installation, automatic gate systems, steel railings, access control, and DoorBird integrations. Whether you need a backyard privacy fence or a motorized entry gate for a commercial property, we have the skills and equipment to do it right.
Gerbert Portillo founded this company on a straightforward idea: do clean, solid work and treat every customer fairly. That approach has driven every project since 2018, and it still does today.

Our Story
Gerbert started Portillo Fences and Gates in 2018 after years of hands-on work in the trades. He saw a gap in the local market for a fencing company that combined real craftsmanship with responsive service, and he built this business to fill it.
Over the years we have grown our service area, expanded into gate automation and access control, and taken on larger commercial projects alongside the residential work that has always been our foundation. What has not changed is the attention we put into every installation and the communication we maintain with every client from first call to final walkthrough.

What We Install and Repair
On the fencing side, we install wood, vinyl, aluminum, chain link, pool fencing, and fully custom designs. Wood fences suit traditional residential properties and give you flexibility in height and style. Vinyl and aluminum require very little maintenance and hold up well in wet or cold conditions. Chain link is a practical, cost-effective choice for larger perimeters, dog runs, and commercial applications.
Pool fencing requires attention to local safety codes. We build pool enclosures that meet or exceed the requirements in your municipality, so you can check that box with confidence.
On the gate side, we handle standard gate installation as well as full automatic gate systems, including inground motors, arm operators, and slide operators. We integrate access control systems and DoorBird entry systems for properties that need secure, remote-managed entry, and we repair existing gates and automatic systems that are no longer functioning correctly.
We also fabricate and install steel railings for decks, stairs, and commercial applications. Galvanizing is available for metal components that need long-term corrosion resistance, which is especially relevant for properties near water or in high-humidity areas.
If you have a fence that has seen better days, our repair services cover everything from single damaged boards to full post replacement. We will give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your situation.

Why Homeowners and Property Managers Choose Us
There are plenty of fencing companies in New York. Here is what sets Portillo Fences and Gates apart.
Most fencing companies stop at the fence. We go further with automatic gates, inground motors, arm and slide operators, access control systems, and DoorBird integrations. You get one contractor who can build the fence and wire the gate, which means fewer vendors and fewer headaches.

We dig posts below the frost line, set them in concrete, and check for plumb and level before moving on. Shortcuts show up fast in New York winters. We build fences that hold up through freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and everything else the Hudson Valley throws at them.

Zoning rules, permit requirements, and HOA restrictions vary from town to town across our service area. We know what is required in Mahopac versus Newburgh versus White Plains, and we confirm your project is compliant before the first post goes in the ground.

We carry full insurance on every job. You are never taking on liability by hiring us, and you will never have to wonder whether a contractor on your property is covered. That is a basic standard, and we meet it without exception.

You will know what we are doing, when we are doing it, and what to expect at every stage. We do not disappear after the estimate or leave you guessing about the timeline. Our team stays in contact from start to finish so there are no surprises on installation day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a permit to install a fence in New York?
It depends on your town, the height of the fence, and where it sits on your property. Many municipalities in Westchester and the Hudson Valley require a permit for fences above a certain height, and HOA rules add another layer of requirements in some neighborhoods. We check the rules for your specific address before we start, so you do not run into problems after the installation is done.
What fence material holds up best in the Hudson Valley climate?
Vinyl and aluminum both perform well in this region because they resist moisture and do not warp or rot through freeze-thaw cycles. Wood is a great option too, especially pressure-treated pine or cedar, as long as it is properly installed and maintained. We can walk you through the practical trade-offs of each material based on your property and how much maintenance you want to take on.
Can you install an automatic gate on an existing fence?
In many cases, yes. We assess your existing fence and gate setup to determine what is needed. Depending on the gate size, weight, and the type of automation you want, we will recommend the right operator: an arm operator, a slide operator, or an inground motor system.
How long does a typical fence installation take?
Most residential fence installations take one to two days, depending on the size of the property and the material involved. Custom work, automatic gate systems, and access control integrations take longer. We give you a realistic timeline before the project starts so you can plan accordingly.
Do you repair fences you did not install?
Yes. We repair all types of fences and gates regardless of who originally installed them. If a post is rotting, panels are damaged, or a gate is no longer functioning correctly, we assess the situation and recommend the most practical fix.
